Social Supermarket provides support for people in need in the local community. It operates out of Rotherham Minster and takes referrals from a variety of places. It is different from a traditional food bank in that, although it provides food, it offers more than this.

The way it works is that when someone is referred, their needs are assessed and they become a member for a three month period. During that time, they pay a small sum of £3 per week, for which they are entitled to a weekly shop of basic provisions, including food, toiletries, cleaning products etc. This ensures that the members and their families have enough to eat each week and, in many cases, allows them to use what money they have to  help pay for other things, for example heating and electricity.  In addition, they can also access a range of other activities and support from the Minster Team or other agencies which work with the Minster. This might include, for example, support in managing money and debt, Citizens Advice input, craft activities, emotional and spiritual support from the clergy team. The aim to support the well-being of members and help those in difficulty get back on track with their lives.
