Today, we have been looking at the main components that make up blood, in order to prepare us for writing our explanation writing about the heart and how it works. The children learnt lots of new vocabulary and can explain what blood is made up of and why blood is needed. The children were surprised that blood also contains solids as well as being a liquid. We were able to make mock blood by using every day household items including: hoop cereal covered in red food colouring (red blood cells), small white marshmallows (white blood cells), porridge oats (platelets) and water with yellow food colouring in (plasma). The children though about percentages when trying to concoct their blood recipes as blood contains different amounts of each.
