The children in REY have been exploring the balance scales and how they work. The children investigated what happens when different objects are placed on each side of the scale. They carefully observed how the scales moved up and down depending on the weight of the items. Many of the children began using mathematical language such as heavy and light to describe what they noticed. They talked about how one side went down when it was heavier and how one side went up when it was lighter.
